Welcome to the website for the NI Maths Teachers' Association. Whether you have been involved with us before or not, hopefully this will give you some insight into what we do and why we exist.
We are an association led by classroom teachers, so please get in contact to discuss the work or any ideas you may have.
RATIONALE
Every Mathematics teacher understands the impact that effective teaching, collaboration and professional support can have on pupils’ confidence and success. The NI Maths Teachers’ Association exists to address a clear gap in subject-specific professional development and to provide opportunities for the mathematics teaching community to collaborate and learn. This document outlines our key areas of focus and priorities as we work to support Mathematics teachers across Northern Ireland.
VISION STATEMENT
The NI Maths Teachers’ Association contributes to the development of Mathematics across Northern Ireland in order to improve experiences, confidence and outcomes.
MISSION STATEMENT
The NI Maths Teachers’ Association aims to:
Support and enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematics among students and teachers in Northern Ireland.
Foster a collaborative environment for the exchange of ideas, resources, and best practices in the field of Mathematics education.
Provide high quality professional development opportunities for Mathematics teachers.
NIMTA will research and promote the evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning. This will be considered within the context of Post Primary Mathematics.
There will be opportunities for members to contribute to consultations and make their voices heard.
NIMTA will bring teachers and schools together with a common focus to support teaching and learning. It will support the work that exists within ALCs and other professional bodies.
Mathematics will be celebrated and championed, promoting positive attitudes towards the subject in schools and across the wider public.
NIMTA will host an annual conference and workshops throughout the year. This will ensure that Mathematics teachers across NI have access to high quality and relevant professional learning.
We will work with trainee and beginning teachers to ensure they make the best possible start to their teaching career.
The NI Maths Teachers' Association was founded in 2025 to address the gap in support for Post Primary Maths teachers in Northern Ireland. It grew largely out of an online community who had been sharing ideas and resources since 2020.
It was largely felt that mathematics education was too important to be worked out in isolation and collaboration was required in order to move forward and make improvements. Since the introduction of new specifications in 2018/19, there has been little support with change in content or approach.
With future changes planned, NIMTA has been formed to support Maths teachers through the phase and ensure there are adequate opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
